Brembo Sensify braking system enters production – intelligent system with electromechanical, AI functions

Unveiled in 2021, the Brembo Sensify intelligent braking system has now entered “large-scale series production for a leading global vehicle manufacturer”, the braking systems manufacturer has announced. Brembo states that it has recently signed new contracts that enables the supply of “hundreds of thousands of units” annually.

The Brembo Sensify intelligent braking system is described as a fluid-free architecture that does without hydraulic circuits and centralised actuation, and the brake pedal is instead connected to a module that sends signals to the vehicle’s main ECU to communicate how the brake pedal is being depressed.

There are two ECUs for the Sensify system; one each for the front and rear wheels. While the commands from the ECUs are sent separately, they are still linked as a failsafe. These not only receive input from the brake pedal, but also monitor parameters including road surface friction, vehicle weight and weight distribution, vehicle speed and steering angle.

Both ECUs control each actuator for each brake caliper individually, enabling independent, and more precise brake force application upon each wheel as required. Each actuator is located close to each brake caliper, enabling the use of shorter hydraulic circuits. According to the video by Brembo, the brake system can be configured with electromechanical actuators which act directly on the calipers, without hydraulic lines.

With brake actuation done by ECUs, the Brembo Sensify system can be customised via an app for changes to brake “feel”, pedal travel and braking force. As the customisation of settings is done electronically, these can be saved as presets for different drivers of the same vehicle.

Incorporating artificial intelligence means that anti-skid and traction control systems can be incorporated to provide a fully integrated suite of driver aids, at a cost. As the Sensify system is essentially electronic, braking can also be engaged using switches or buttons, instead of the conventional foot pedal.

Brembo claims that the Sensify system is more lightweight and compact than traditional braking systems, and can be easily set up for left- or right-hand-drive layouts. It also claims more sustainable braking, as the optimised braking action on each wheel combined with the absence of drag between pads and discs can reduce emissions.

The Sensify system is also versatile, as it is applicable to commercial vehicles, which will benefit from the system’s ability to adapt to varying vehicle loads. Motorcycles, which are more greatly influenced by changes in weight shifts and road surface conditions, also stand to benefit.
