Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) has announced a new defensive driving course called the Selamat Driving Experience, part of its broader Selamat marketing and awareness campaign focused on safety. The event, set to be held at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) Driving Experience Centre next weekend, May 16 to 17, is aimed at encouraging Malaysians to “stop treating safety as an afterthought.”

Participants will be taught on how to handle emergency situations while driving, guided by professionally-certified driving instructors. They will also get to experience Volvo’s safety features first-hand, including the latest Safe Space Technology that uses AI and data from the car’s multitude of sensors to predict risks and avoid them.

The company says the event is meant to spread awareness on how quickly the thankless task of driving can turn into a life-or-death situation – especially to those who have not experienced such close shaves before. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), a total of 4,428 transport-related fatalities were recorded in 2024, of which 2,574 casualties were aged between 15 and 40 years old.

“We often take safety for granted, growing apathetic and even careless, simply because it hasn’t happened to us yet,” said VCM sales and marketing director Patricia Yaw. “But behind every number is a person who didn’t come home. The Selamat Driving Experience aims to transform that abstraction into something real by bringing these stories and experiences into an immersive space where the cost of quiet complacency becomes impossible to ignore.”

Registrations are open to the public and cost RM150 for Volvo owners, RM300 for non-Volvo drivers and RM100 for non-participating guests, with only 192 slots available on a first come, first served basis. Participants are discouraged from bringing minors under 18 years of age due to the active track environment and schedule.
